The Second Orthodox Volunteer Day has taken place on July 2, 2016 in Munich and was timed to the commemoration of St. John of Shangai and San-Francisco<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/a> The event was attended by about 50 volunteers who came from 15 points of the European continent, from<\/span> Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Since the meeting was held in Germany, most of the participants came from German cities: Berlin, Munich, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Bonn, Dortmund, Wiesbaden, Baden-Baden, Stuttgart and others.
\nThe Day was organized by the Russian Orthodox Diakonia in Europe “Good Deed”, an organization established in March 2012 under the direction of Alina Titova. Every year Diakonia helps to about 40 sick children who come for a medical treatment in Europe from the countries of former Soviet Union. The organization is active in the various areas of social service: the interaction with German clinics and funds (D<\/span>iakonia mediates the financial support of <\/span>German funds<\/span> and private donors to cover <\/span>medical expense<\/span>s<\/span> for a total amount of about EUR 20,000<\/span> per year), supplying<\/span> medical equipment, volunteer training, spiritual and psychological support, meetings with the priests, organization of charity <\/span>fairs and events<\/span>, translations.<\/p>\n

<\/a> Representatives of local dia<\/span>konic<\/span> groups of \u201c<\/span>Good Deed\u201d<\/span> and colleagues from other volunteer organizations <\/span>have <\/span>exchanged <\/span>their <\/span>experiences and discussed issues and <\/span>problems<\/span> relat<\/span>ed<\/span> to the care of patients, interact<\/span>ion of volunteers<\/span> with each other, the organization of the volunteer movement in the parishes and the spiritual <\/span>dimension<\/span> of the volunteer service. <\/span>The archpriests <\/span>Ilya Limberger (Stuttgart), Nikolai Zabelich <\/span>(<\/span>Munich) <\/span>and Nikolai Artemo<\/span>ff (<\/span>Munich) have actively participated in discussions <\/span>and answered the questions.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> A<\/span>n especially<\/span> significant <\/span>moment <\/span>for all participants of the <\/span>Day<\/span> was the arrival of Bishop Panteleimon of Orekhovo-Zuyevo, chairman of the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Service. <\/span>It is the second year the bishop<\/span> takes part <\/span>in the event. In a <\/span>conversation<\/span> with the volunteers, Bishop Panteleimon <\/span>has <\/span>paid <\/span>a <\/span>special attention to the <\/span>significance<\/span> of suffering in <\/span>earthy<\/span> life and called for volunteers for <\/span>a <\/span>sacrificial love for the neighbor: “You <\/span>should not shut yourself off<\/span>. If our spiritual life is only limited to prayer, fasting and the observance of religious <\/span>rites<\/span> – this is only the outward doing that is not always useful for our soul. <\/span>Only<\/span> if we <\/span>donate<\/span> our<\/span> time and energy <\/span>to<\/span> those who need our help, we w<\/span>ould<\/span> fully fulfill the second commandment of Christ – love thy neighbor as thyself. It is this love <\/span>that <\/span>will save the world. “<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> On Sunday <\/span>July 3<\/span>rd<\/span>, <\/span>the <\/span>volunteers and <\/span>their pastors<\/span> prayed <\/span>together <\/span>at the Divine Liturgy in the Cathedral of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors Russian and St. Nicholas. After the service, <\/span>the summary of<\/span> the<\/span> Orthodox Volunteer Day <\/span>has been presented <\/span>and the main <\/span>goals<\/span> and objectives for the development of volunteering in Europe <\/span>have been formulated<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In accordance with the tradition to hold <\/i><\/span> <\/i>the Orthodox Volunteer Day at the first Saturday in July, the next Day will take place on July 1<\/i><\/span>st <\/i><\/span><\/sup>, <\/i><\/span>2017.
